A Man's Desperation Leads to Tragedy
Herten, North Rhine-Westphalia - They smiled for the camera, a happy family. But unbeknownst to them, their world was about to crumble.
Ugur S. (35), a man from Turkey, is currently on trial at Bochum District Court for the gruesome triple murder of his ex-wife Rukiye Ö. (37) and their two daughters (5, 7). The delightful family selfie belies the chilling events that unfolded.

The trial commenced on Monday, with Ugur remaining silent at first. However, shortly after the tragedy, he confessed to the police, admitting to suffocating all three family members in the spring.
A Haunting Discovery
Rukiye's friend attempted to contact her multiple times during mid-May at their Herten apartment, but received no answer. Finally, the fire department was forced to enter the apartment. The horrific scene that greeted them was unforgettable - the bodies of Rukiye, her 7-year-old daughter Peri, and her 5-year-old daughter Masal lay in the bedroom.
The police spent hours searching for Ugur, finally locating him at a central accommodation facility (ZUE) in Marl using his cell phone.
While the couple had been divorced since 2019, Ugur had hoped for a reconciliation. But when Rukiye announced her intention to leave on the first available flight, he reportedly lost his grip, resorting to violence.
After an intimate moment, Ugur allegedly covered Rukiye's mouth and throat until she couldn't breathe, then suffocated Peri and Masal one by one.
The children's toys still litter the floor in the kitchen, a poignant reminder of their short lives.
Roots of Strife
The family hailed from Kahramanmaras, a province in southern Anatolia, Turkey, near the Syrian border. The region was shaken by an earthquake earlier this year, resulting in the loss of countless lives and homes.
Germany has witnessed cases of honor killings, particularly among migrant communities like Afghanistan and Syria, where such practices are prevalent.etheless, the tragic incident in Herten might not fit neatly into this category, nor can it be directly linked to divorce or separation.
Seeking Justice and Support
The trial continues, with the public prosecutor's office firm in their belief that Ugur is responsible for the triple murder. Regardless of the outcome, the consequences of this tragedy will be felt for years to come.
Domestic violence is a prevalent issue in Germany and survivors can access numerous resources. Among them are: - Terre Des Femmes (TDF) - Advocating for women's rights and offering support services. - Women's Shelters - Providing temporary housing and counseling in various cities. - Legal Aid - Assistance in navigating the legal system and obtaining protection orders. - Counseling Services - Offering psychological therapy for survivors.
Discussing sensitive topics such as divorce, separation, honor killings, and domestic violence can be challenging. However, it's crucial to continue shedding light on these issues, working towards solutions, and offering support to those affected.
