Central Visayas Sees High Turnout for Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections Registration

The registration period for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) in Central Visayas came to a close on August 10, 2025, with a total of 33,506 residents applying to vote in the upcoming elections.

During the 10-day registration period from August 1-10, 2025, a significant number of residents in the provinces of Cebu and Bohol participated in the process. Specifically, 23,206 applications were submitted in Cebu province, and 10,300 in Bohol province [1].

These registration figures were announced by Francisco Pobe, director of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Central Visayas, on Monday, Aug. 11 [1].

The registration period may have been affected by the proposed term extension and postponement of the BSKE. The Senate and House of Representatives have moved to extend the term of barangay officials from three years to four, and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is expected to sign a bill postponing the BSKE from December 1, 2025, to November 2026 [1][4].

The exact date for the new BSKE has not been specified, but it will take place in November 2026, pending the president's signing of the postponement law [1][4]. The decision to postpone the BSKE and extend the term of barangay officials is still subject to the President's approval [3].

It is important to note that the 33,506 figure refers specifically to BSKE applicants during the full 10-day period, and does not include the total number of new voter registrants region-wide in Central Visayas, which was 117,631 as of August 9, 2025 [2].

As the BSKE registration period comes to a close, the focus now shifts to the approval process for the proposed changes and the scheduling of the new election date. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
