In the past year, Pakistan has witnessed a surge in militancy, particularly in its border regions with Afghanistan. This resurgence has been linked to the return to power of the Afghan Taliban in Kabul in 2021.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a separate group from the Taliban, has been waging a campaign against security forces. The majority of the killings occurred in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the southern province of Balochistan, with nearly half of those killed last year being soldiers and police officers. Last year was Pakistan's deadliest in nearly a decade, with more than 1,600 killed.

The TTP's presence has increased over the past two months, leading to concerns about the group's growing influence. The Pakistani military has been conducting 'sanitization operations' to eliminate any Indian-sponsored militants in the area.

The Indian state accused by Pakistani authorities of supporting militias active in Pakistan's border regions is Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan has also accused India of backing the Taliban militants, with the military referring to the Taliban fighters as 'Khwarij' in a statement.

Tensions between Pakistan and India have been high, with a four-day skirmish in May. Both countries have accused each other of supporting armed groups to destabilize one another. The Islamabad-based Center for Research and Security Studies reported that more than 460 people, mostly members of the security forces, have been killed this year in attacks carried out by armed groups fighting the state.

The Taliban have also been active, claiming responsibility for an ambush that killed 12 soldiers in a neighboring district on Saturday. The Pakistani military recently killed 31 Taliban militants in two operations near the Afghan border.

Pakistan has accused neighboring Afghanistan of failing to expel militants using Afghan territory to launch attacks on Pakistan. The Pakistani government has called for increased cooperation from Afghanistan to address the growing threat of militancy.

As the situation remains tense, both Pakistan and India continue to grapple with the challenges posed by militant groups operating in their border regions. The future of security in the region remains uncertain, with the potential for further escalation of violence a real concern.
