Grimsby Town Advance to EFL Cup Fourth Round for First Time in Two Decades

Grimsby Town made history in the EFL Cup as they secured a place in the fourth round for the first time since the 2001-02 season. The Marine and Tranmere Rovers conquerors achieved this feat with a 1-0 victory against Sheffield Wednesday, and a subsequent 1-0 win against Brentford in the third round.

In the match against Brentford, Jaze Kabia scored the winning goal in the 49th minute, sending the Mariners through to the next round. Meanwhile, Hakon Valdimarsson performed heroics for Brentford, saving John McGinn's penalty in the shootout.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa and Brentford played out a thrilling 1-1 draw. Liverpool loanee Harvey Elliot put Villa ahead two minutes before halftime, but Aaron Hickey equalised for Brentford just before the hour mark. The match ended in a draw, with Brentford emerging victorious in the subsequent penalty shootout, 4-2.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace progressed to the fourth round following a penalty shootout against Millwall. Palace debutant Walter Benítez made two penalty saves that led to their victory. The equaliser for Millwall came in the 91st minute at Selhurst Park, scored by Ryan Leonard.

In another noteworthy development, Palace are now unbeaten in their last seven meetings with Millwall, a feat achieved only once before (October 1986 to September 1993). Unai Emery's Aston Villa, on the other hand, went four games without scoring before their goal against Brentford.

Notably, Grimsby Town started only two senior players in their match against Sheffield Wednesday, with Ethan Horvath and Jamal Lowe being the only senior starters. This tenacity and resilience have seen them eliminate two sides from a higher division in a single EFL Cup campaign for the first time since 2005-06.

In the midst of these exciting matches, many Wednesday supporters stayed away from Hillsborough in protest against owner Dejphon Chansiri. The EFL Cup continues to provide thrilling moments and unexpected upsets, with Grimsby Town's journey being a testament to this.
