Elderly Dancer Shines with Timeless Torches as New York Liberty Take on Mercury

In the heart of the WNBA playoffs, the New York Liberty are set to face the Phoenix Mercury in Game 3 of the first round. But before the action on the court, a special performance will take place, courtesy of the Timeless Torches.

At the helm of this squad of dancers over the age of 40 is Margaret Hamilton, a 56-year-old legal executive assistant who has been a captain for the Timeless Torches for 20 years. The oldest member of the group, Shirley Koehler, at 88 years old, brings a unique charm and energy to the team. Koehler, who took a hiatus from dancing after getting married but later auditioned for the group after seeing them perform at a Liberty game, is motivated by the "family feeling" the Timeless Torches provide.

Koehler is not alone in her passion for dance. Phyllis Spencer, a fitness instructor, joined the Timeless Torches after her children auditioned for a kids dance squad. Spencer, who teaches kickboxing, gymnastics, and aerobics at the YMCA, finds dancing to be a "natural high."

The Timeless Torches are popular due to their eclectic styles and the personality of each member. Hamilton emphasizes the representation of different body types and diversity within the group, inspiring their fanbase, particularly the younger generation, to believe they can dance at any age.

Spencer knows how it feels to want to give up on a project and encourages her fellow dancers to keep trying. "I've been there," she says, "but when you push through, the rewards are immeasurable." Confidence and training are key messages she instills in her dancers.

Koehler practices with the Timeless Torches weekly and reauditions for her spot each season. She enjoys performing for the crowd and forgets about her worries while dancing. The Timeless Torches celebrated their 20th anniversary this year, a testament to their enduring spirit and passion for dance.

As the Liberty take on the Mercury, the Timeless Torches will undoubtedly add to the excitement of the game with their energetic performances. A win for the Liberty would be a road win and generate joy in New York. Meanwhile, Caitlin Clark, with her impressive 32 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists, will be a formidable opponent for the Liberty to contend with. Regardless of the outcome, the Timeless Torches will continue to inspire and entertain, proving that age is truly just a number when it comes to passion and dedication.
