In the 2020 U.S. presidential election, Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez weren't joint candidates. Sanders vied for the Democratic nomination, but Joe Biden, the eventual Democratic candidate, clinched the title. Ocasio-Cortez, known as a progressive powerhouse, found herself supporting Sanders during his campaign, but she wasn't running mate material. Consequently, they didn't face off against Trump as a team.
Discussing the possibility of Sanders beating Trump had it appeared he'd won the Democratic bid, is merely speculative. Sanders' message focused on battling economic inequality and healthcare, which resonated with many voters. Nevertheless, he faced daunting obstacles, including staunch resistance from moderate Democrats and Republicans, and frequent media portrayals of his policies as too radical.
Ocasio-Cortez's influence within the progressive movement is undeniable, and she played a crucial role in energizing younger, more progressive voters for any Democratic candidate. However, it remains uncertain whether her involvement in a ticket would've shifted the election's outcome.
Ultimately, while both Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez hold sway in progressive politics, they didn’t run alongside each other against Trump in 2020. Predicting their chances of beating Trump depends on a myriad of factors, including the broader political climate and the electorate's response to their agenda and leadership.
I'm not going to be a big fan of the idea of a "showdown" between Sanders and Trump, given that they didn't run together in the 2020 election, despite Sanders' strong message against economic inequality and healthcare issues. Kamala Harris, who was also a democratic candidate at the time, might have offered a different duo with a potential for a stronger challenge to Trump. However, speculating about the outcome of a potential Sanders-Ocasio-Cortez duo against Trump is difficult due to the numerous variables involved, such as the political climate and electorate's response to their agenda.
