After 23 years as a thrilling destination, Six Flags America in Bowie, Maryland, will shut down in 2025. The decision comes as the Six Flags Entertainment Corporation declared that the park no longer aligns with their long-term growth strategy.
"As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America is not a strategic fit with the company's long-term growth plan," revealed Richard Zimmerman, Six Flags President and CEO, in a statement. "We believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment."
Six Flags America is well known for its iconic coaster, the Wild One. This wooden giant, which first saw daylight in 1917 at Paragon Park in Hull, Massachusetts, has since made its mark in Bowie after the park's rebranding in 1999. The American Coaster Enthusiasts recognize the park's effort to maintain Wild One, ensuring its 100+ years of history remain alive for riders- dried leaves and all.
But what's next for Wild One and the park's other attractions? Six Flags is still mum on the details. They estimate roughly 70 full-time employees will be affected by the closure, with severance and other benefits being offered to eligible workers. All 2025 season passes and tickets will be honored for the park's final season.

Prince George's County Council Chairman Edward Burroughs sees this closure as a prime opportunity for redevelopment, sharing with WJLA, "So many acres there that we can redevelop into something that's going to be special for both residents and the county, overall." He notes a possible collaboration between the community, county, and Six Flags Entertainment Corporation to ensure a development that's beneficial for the area.
