Crime on the Rise: Swiping Heat Pumps in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt
With the energy transition transforming Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, the installation of heat pumps is skyrocketing. Unfortunately, these alternative heating systems are becoming a tempting target for criminals. According to the Saxony-Anhalt State Criminal Police Office (LKA), the number of heat pump thefts rose from 15 incidents last year to nine in the first half of 2023. The financial damage incurred in these thefts is substantial, reaching the lower six-figures.
The issue of heat pump thefts is not limited to Saxony-Anhalt alone. Last year, a heat pump worth €7,800 was stolen from a property in Bautzen, Saxony. Two such incidents were reported in the district in November this year, as reported by the LKA. In the district of Nordsaschen, burglars spotted an opportunity in an unoccupied, locked house containing a ready-installed heat pump, piping, hydraulic unit, and an outdoor unit with a combined value of approximately €10,000. In Langensalza, thieves even managed to pilfer a 350 kg heat pump from a construction site secured by a construction fence.
In Magdeburg, six heat pump thefts were recorded in the past two years, emphasizing a potential trend. Although this crime is not yet widespread, experts warn that the growing market for expensive heat pumps makes them a prime target for criminal activity.
Fighting Heat Pump Thefts: Expert Advice
Crime experts recommend taking various steps to secure construction sites and protect heat pumps. These measures include:
- Fencing and Surveillance Systems: Implement strong fencing around construction sites and equip them with video and alarm systems where possible.
- Registering Devices: Record the individual numbers of your devices to speed up insurance claims and police reports in the event of a theft.
- Secure Anchoring: Secure heat pumps by anchoring them with iron rods or bolts, using shear nuts or drive-in balls for hexagon socket screws. Alternatively, consider welding the nuts for added security.
- Insurance Coverage: Consult your insurance company to determine if your policy covers heat pump theft and the limitations and requirements for filing a claim.
- Community Engagement: Foster strong relationships between the construction industry, police, and local communities to raise awareness about the issue of heat pump theft and open lines of communication to reduce incidents.
Incorporating these recommendations can help mitigate the risk of heat pump thefts during the energy transition in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.

Enrichment for Effective Theft Prevention
To maximize protection against heat pump thefts, supplement your security measures with the following strategies:
- Secure Storage Solutions: Secure heat pumps in lockable, tamper-proof containers or on-site enclosures that utilize materials like solid timber. These solutions can both reduce noise and present a deterrent for thieves.
- Enhanced Job Site Security: Implement motion-sensor lights, visible warning signs, and prominent job-site security alarm systems to minimize the attraction to opportunistic thefts.
- Digital Inventory Management: Utilize digital platforms to track device details like serial numbers, purchase dates, and photographs for seamless insurance claims or police reports.
- GPS Tracking and Alerts: Invest in GPS-enabled tracking equipment that enables real-time monitoring, movement alerts, and extended tracking ranges, making it harder for thieves to operate undetected.
- Employee Education: Engage your team members in routine security protocols, GPS tracking usage, and inventory management to ensure a collective understanding and emphasis on heightened security.
- Frequent Site Inspections: Regularly inspect job sites for potential vulnerabilities and make necessary adjustments to enhance overall protection.
- Community Engagement: Collaborate with local authorities and communities to spread awareness regarding the importance of protecting energy-efficient equipment, fostering a more vigilant society.
By implementing these enrichment strategies, you can fortify construction sites and new buildings against heat pump thefts, thereby ensuring the ongoing success of the energy transformation efforts in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.
