Theatre & Dance Department Set to Stage Shakespeare's Play, Cymbeline, Later This Month

The English Department at Holy Cross is thrilling audiences with its new initiative, Drunk Shakespeare, and setting the stage for a captivating season ahead. The highlight of the current lineup is the timeless romance play, Cymbeline by William Shakespeare, which is being performed at the Prior Performing Arts Center.

Cymbeline: A Tale of Love, Betrayal, and Redemption

Set in a mythical Celtic Britain, Cymbeline tells the story of Imogen, the virtuous daughter of King Cymbeline, who faces exile due to her secret marriage against her father's wishes. The play unfolds a complex narrative involving court intrigue, threats from the wicked Queen and her lecherous son Cloten, Posthumus's irrational jealousy, and eventual reconciliation and forgiveness.

A Dark Fairy Tale Comes to Life

Directed by Glenn Havlan and Gaby Schneider and presented by the Actors Ensemble of Berkeley, this production of Cymbeline showcases the dark fairy-tale elements of the play, portraying love, loss, survival, and reconciliation in a compelling manner.

Performance Details

Cymbeline is being performed at the Prior Performing Arts Center from July 4 through July 20, 2025, with shows taking place on weekends and holidays at 4 PM. Tickets for the public are priced at $15, while members of the Holy Cross community can purchase them for $10.

Upcoming Productions

The Prior Performing Arts Center will also host other exciting events, such as a pop-up production of Mfoniso Udofia's "Sojourners" with The Huntington Theatre and a performance from the Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band with Mali Obomsawin.

As the first show of the 2024-2025 season, Cymbeline is just the beginning of an exciting lineup for the Holy Cross theater department. The department will also present Sweeney Todd and Enron during the school year.
