Revitalized Open-Air Venue: Harzer Bergtheater in Thale Springs Back to Life after Extensive Renovations
Hey there! Let's talk about the Harzer Bergtheater, a piece of German history nestled within the enchanting town of Thale that's once again readying itself for the glory of performances and concerts. This natural theater, perched high above the town on a rocky plateau known as the Hexentanzplatz, has undergone a multi-year makeover and is scheduled to reopen its doors at the end of May.
Ronny Große, the theater’s intendant since October 2013, made the announcement to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur. Große is no stranger to Thale, as he’s also served as the managing director of the Bodetal Tourismus GmbH since the end of 2017, an organization that oversees the Bergtheater. Thale acquired ownership of the theater back in 1992.
The Bergtheater, founded in 1903, once sported a seating capacity of 1,292, but demand regularly exceeded this limit. Now, after the comprehensive renovation, an incredible 1,903 seats will be available for eager theater-goers, making sure no audience member misses out on the magic of the stage.
Große explained that the renovation aimed to marry history and innovation. Prior to the facelift, the theater was, in his words, several decades behind the times. "The investment backlog was substantial," said Große. "We were nowhere near modern standards."
The revamp included a complete overhaul of the sound and lighting technology, fitting the stage with an LED wall, and refreshing the two-story, underground dressing room and artist area with modern conveniences such as a ventilation system, canteen, lounge area, updated communication technology, and more. They managed to maintain the theater's rustic charm amidst the modern updates.
Size-wise, the stage remains the same, as it’s constrained by the natural landscape. "We're working on a rocky platform. Mother Nature sets the boundaries for us," said Große. Despite the extensive renovation and expansion, the breathtaking view of the Harz foreland from the theater's seats remains unchanged. "We're a natural theater, and we've preserved that essence," added Große.
The grand reopening will be marked by the premiere of the musical "Walpurga" on May 31. According to Thale’s mayor, Maik Zedschack (CDU), the total expenses for the renovation will amount to approximately 27.5 million euros, encompassing more than just the theater itself. The project also includes the redesign and partial spatial reorganization of the Hexentanzplatz with a new parking deck, roads, and paths, making it bike-friendly, and developing the "Hexendorf" as a tourist attraction. The funding comes from the European Union, federal and state governments, and the city of Thale.
That's all for now! Don't miss the spectacular return of the Harzer Bergtheater in Thale. Catch the musical "Walpurga" on May 31 and immerse yourself in the rich history and stunning beauty of this natural open-air theater.
