"64-Team World Cup Proposal Faces Backlash"

The World Cup faces strong opposition from DFB

The Germany Football Association (DFB) has expressed its disapproval of a proposal to expand the 2030 FIFA World Cup to 64 teams. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf has labeled the idea as "unfeasible" and "ridiculous."

Ahead of the upcoming FIFA Congress, Neuendorf warned about the "serious consequences for national leagues" if the World Cup expansion were to proceed. According to him, the tournament phase would be prolonged, leading to an "enormous physical strain" on players.

The idea of a 64-team World Cup, proposed by Uruguayan Football Association president Ignacio Alonso, was first presented in the FIFA Council in early March. However, it is not currently on the official agenda for the Congress in Asunción. The Council, including Neuendorf, will meet before the assembly of FIFA member associations.

International Reaction

While the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) supports the Uruguayan proposal, it faces resistance from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the North and Central American Football Confederation (CONCACAF). Furthermore, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has criticized the plans as a "bad idea," expressing concerns similar to those of the DFB.

FIFA is already set to implement a 48-team format for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Uruguay is a co-host of the 2030 World Cup, also taking place in Argentina, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain, and Morocco.

Critics argue that expanding the World Cup to 64 teams could dilute the quality of play, devalue continental qualifying competitions, and be premature, considering FIFA's upcoming implementation of a 48-team format.

Despite the DFB's firm stance, it remains to be seen whether the 64-team proposal will gain traction during the FIFA Congress or amongst other member associations.
