The Wilhelm Raabe Literature Award
The Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize, one of the most highly endowed awards in Germany, has been a beacon for contemporary German-language literature since its establishment in 1944. Over the years, the prize has undergone reorientation, with notable recipients such as Rainald Goetz, Lukas Lüscher, and the latest laureate, Saša Stanišić (2023 or 2024), joining its esteemed list.
Originally named the Wilhelm Raabe Prize, the award was redesigned with modified cultural political objectives in 2000. Since then, it has been awarded annually in Braunschweig, Germany, with the exception of the initial years when it was given every two years for outstanding individual works.
The prize money, initially €25,000, was increased to €30,000 in 2010. The award is for a narrative work written in German, and self-application is not possible.
The selection process for the Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize is conducted by a nine-member expert jury appointed by the city of Brunswick and Deutschlandradio/Deutschlandfunk. The jury decides on the awarded novel, ensuring a rigorous and fair process.
The prize is donated by the City of Brunswick and Deutschlandradio/Deutschlandfunk. The contact person for the Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize is Andreas Böttcher, who can be reached at Leonhardstraße 29a, 38102 Brunswick, or via Tel.: 0531 7075834, Fax: 0531 70189316, and Email: raabe-haus@unsere Website.de.
The Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize is awarded in November, and the award-winning work must have been published in the year of the award. The prize is open to all German-language literature, making it a significant platform for authors and their works.
