The White House mulls over proposing a visit for Zelenskyy to Alaska

In a bid to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, a potential trilateral summit involving former U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been under discussion.

The summit, if it were to take place, would see Trump and Putin meeting in Anchorage, Alaska on August 15, 2025 [2][3]. However, the participation of Zelenskyy is yet to be confirmed.

Trump has expressed his readiness to meet Putin either alone or in a trilateral format with Zelenskyy. The White House, on the other hand, has shown a preference for the trilateral meeting, viewing it as a means to help resolve the war in Ukraine [1].

Zelenskyy has acknowledged the logical sequence of a meeting between Trump and Putin preceding a trilateral meeting among all three leaders [2]. He has also emphasised Ukraine's reliance on American support and readiness to work towards ending the conflict.

Prior to the proposed summit, Trump and Vice President JD Vance held a virtual discussion with Zelenskyy and European allies as the meeting approached [2].

Details about whether Zelenskyy will attend the meetings or the plans moving forward have not been fully disclosed. However, the preference and public statements highlight the importance of involving all three leaders for a comprehensive peace process [1][5].

Officials from the administration are working to gain support for a potential ceasefire from the Ukrainian government and European leaders. It's unclear if Zelenskyy would ultimately be in Alaska for the meetings. The senior administration official mentioned that it is "absolutely" possible for Zelenskyy to visit Alaska [6].

Putin has proposed an agreement to end the war that would allow Russia to keep large swaths of Ukrainian territory, but has not agreed to a ceasefire [7]. The Ukrainian government did not respond to a request for comment regarding the potential visit of Zelenskyy to Alaska.

Everyone involved in the discussions is hopeful that Zelenskyy will attend the meetings, with the possibility of a historic trilateral summit on the horizon.
