The upcoming marathon commences in August
The annual Speedweek Speed Trap Marathon is set to commence across Europe from August 4 to 10, 2025. This week-long campaign aims to curb speeding on public roads, with participating countries stepping up their traffic police efforts.
ROADPOL, the European network of traffic police, is coordinating the action and involving other countries such as the Netherlands and Austria. This cooperative approach will ensure a comprehensive approach to enforcing speed limits and promoting road safety.
During Speedweek, police and municipalities will conduct checks on highways, urban main streets, and country roads, both stationary and mobile. Areas near schools and 30 km/h zones are particularly at risk during this period, as these locations are known to be hotspots for speeding violations.
Some federal states announce measurement points in advance, while others keep them secret. Modern analysis systems are used by authorities to identify particularly risky stretches. In regions like Baden-Württemberg, citizen tips influence the selection of speed camera locations, encouraging more traffic participation.
In Germany, exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h outside built-up areas can lead to fines and points, and in extreme cases, a driving ban. Drivers who exceed the speed limit by more than 30 km/h in built-up areas face even stricter penalties, with fines of up to €260, two points in the Flensburg register, and a possible driving ban.
Not all federal states will participate fully in Speedweek due to capacity shortages during the holiday season. Some states, such as Bavaria, have announced that they will participate less in August. However, the overall commitment to improving traffic safety remains strong, with Speedweek being part of a long-term strategy.
Unexpected checks by civilian vehicles are also possible during Speedweek. This tactic aims to catch speeding drivers off guard and promote a culture of responsible driving.
