U.S. seeks reclamation of Bagram air base from the Taliban, with Trump asserting strategic value due to its proximity to Chinese nuclear arsenals as justification

The U.S. seeks to reclaim Bagram air base from the Taliban, with President Trump pointing to the base's proximity to Chinese nuclear weapons as the rationale.

In a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday, US President Donald Trump announced the abandonment of the Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan. This marked the end of the US military's and their allies' mission in the war-torn country.

The military airport in northeastern Afghanistan was built in the 1950s with Soviet assistance. However, it was heavily damaged prior to the American takeover in 2001, following the invasion. After the invasion, the Americans took over the damaged base and made it their hub of operations in Afghanistan.

Trump described the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan as a catastrophe. He stated that they had given up one of the largest airbases "for nothing." Despite this, Trump believes he has good chances of success in his current endeavor to regain the former airbase from the Taliban.

The Taliban themselves are responsible for regaining control of the former US airbase. The base was abandoned by US troops on July 9, 2021, ending the US military presence in Afghanistan.

It is believed that the Afghans want something from the USA. Trump hinted at this during his press conference, stating that they are seeking something from the US. The exact nature of these demands remains unclear.

The location of Bagram is near the Chinese border, where they produce their nuclear weapons, as per Trump's statement. The abandonment of the base could have strategic implications for US-China relations in the region.

The US aims to regain their former airbase Bagram in Afghanistan from the Taliban. The success of this endeavor remains to be seen, but it is certain that the abandonment of the base marks a significant shift in US policy in Afghanistan.
