As the clock ticks down to Trump's Middle East journey, the stakes are high for a deal with Iran! The United States and Iran are engaged in tense nuclear negotiations, with no sign of an agreement yet. The fourth round of talks is scheduled in Muscat, Oman, where US special envoy Steve Witkoff will meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtschi.

Irked Exchanges over Trump's Gulf Renaming Plan

The delay in the nuclear talks isn't all that's causing a stir. Trump's plan to rename the Persian Gulf as the 'Gulf of Arabia' has drawn angry reactions from Iran. The initially postponed talks rescheduled just in time for Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates from Tuesday to Thursday.

Years of Controversy over Iran's Nuclear Ambitions

At the heart of the disagreement is Iran's nuclear program. While Iran claims it's for civilian purposes, Western governments fear a potential atomic bomb. Recent Iranian statements about nuclear weapons for military deterrence have fueled the debate. Trump has warned Iran of a devastating military attack if no deal is reached.

In 2015, after lengthy negotiations with China, Russia, the USA, France, Germany, and the UK, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program under the Vienna nuclear deal. Trump, however, scrapped the pact in 2018 and imposed harsh sanctions, followed by non-compliance from Iran.

The USA's High-Pressure Tactics

Witkoff, the US special envoy, has stated that the U.S. demands Iran completely abandons its uranium enrichment program, renounces centrifuges, and has nothing that could facilitate weapon-building. Current uranium enrichment in Iran is up to 60%, far exceeding the 90% required for nuclear weapons. The Vienna nuclear deal only allowed enrichment up to 3.67% and a stockpile of 300kg of uranium.

Iran views its nuclear program as a symbol of national pride, making it unlikely to accept the U.S. demands and opt for imported fuel rods for their civilian nuclear program in the future. The Iranian leadership connects a possible new deal to a relaxation of regional tensions and the lifting of sanctions - a key factor in its political and economic isolation over the past years.

Expanded relations with China and Russia through strategic partnerships are now Iran's lifeline as it continues to generate primary revenues through oil sales, with China as the main buyer, despite being cut off from international payment systems.
