A colossal mountainous and lush territory, where crystal-clear streams flow, with the vivid shades of orange, yellow, and red beeches adorning its banks, lending a mystical glow. Rumors of mystical creatures dwelling within, lingering in folklore and tradition since time immemorial, reside here. The silver screen adaptation, titled Irate, (2023), gracing our Play platform, retrieves inspiration from these shrouded tales and secrets, weaving one of the most awe-inspiring films in Spanish cinema.

A dark, fantastical, and immersive journey. Fantasy, historical epic, and intrigue permeate the second feature film by Paul Urkijo, who previoulsy directed Errementari (2017), presenting an expedition through the past, teeming with fantasy. Basque actor Eneko Sagardoy, acclaimed for the Goya Award in Handia (2017), is one of the main characters of this enchanting tale set against captivating landscapes, with numerous shots from the forests of Irate. He is supported by Edurne Azkarate (Gutuberrak), the breakout star who fills the screen with breathtaking scenes, making her feature debut with this film.

What's rooted in Irate's legend?

Urkijo ventures to the Pyrenees in the 8th century to shine a light on history, featuring the Battle of Roncesvalles (778) and its mystical counterpart, such as the enchanting figure of Mari, a pre-Christian Basque goddess venerated as the Mother Goddess, symbol of a matriarchal religion, and a pre-Indo-European faith whose presence is documented in distant locations. Irate is a grand narrative focusing on Middle Age tales, an era steeped in darkness and mystery and teeming with myths.

"What is named exists"

A poetic definition of the essence of fantasy, but also an affirmation of cultural roots. Upholding the memory of a society's roots, even when we recognize they are imaginary, plays a crucial role in enhancing culture and folklore that thrives on them. Especially if these legends teach the importance of preserving the environment and protecting forests like the Irate.

Just as in The Neverending Story or Excalibur, this film sees fantastic myths fading away since no one ponders them anymore. The figure of the forest emerges as a living entity accordind to Celtic legends, here metamorphosed into a great serpent that bleeds when its trees are cut down to sell to the Franks. Without a doubt, an ecological message advocating for respect for nature is evident.

01.32 minThe film can be interpreted as a testament to the land, with the leading character embodying the essence of the Irate Forest itself, ultimately adopting its name. The antagonist's transgressions extend beyond the protagonist's kingdom and assault the integrity of the Irate Forest. Portrayed with a majestic bearing by Azkarate. A powerful female character that commands attention, particularly in a film where women have much tosay.

The Lamiak, a creature with nocturnal habits, is referenced, who, according to legends, dwelled near rivers, caves, and springs, didn't leave the forest except to weave fabrics with the aid of a spindle and a spinning wheel. In contrast, the female protagonist embodies a Basajaun, characterized by a human body and hooves. A guardian of the forest, ensuring its protection and the preservation of nature. By emitting a series of whistles, she warns of oncoming storms. If you hear her call, seek shelter immediately.

Nowadays, the Irate Forest is considered one of the largest beech forests in Europe, encompassing almost 17,000 hectares of woodland. This vast expanse is managed by four historical communities, situated in its northern and southern zones. The northern areas, Cize and Zuberoa, and the southernmost regions, the valleys of Aezkola and Sanzazar, have managed the forest for over 500 years.

This magical forest, which feels like a magical dreamland, harbors numerous astonishing locations that are waiting to be discovered. Some are accessible, popular tourist spots, while others only reveal their secrets to those willing to explore with a sense of adventure.
