The Trailer for 'War Between Land and Sea' Previews a Conflict the Doctor Cannot Interfere With, Terrifying Earth
In Uncharted Waters: BBC Unveils New "Doctor Who" Spinoff
After the conclusion of the latest season of Doctor Who, the BBC has announced a new spinoff miniseries titled The War Between Land and the Sea. As humanity awaits the return of the time-traveling adventurer, they will face a standalone crisis.
During the climax of Doctor Who's 2025 season, the BBC revealed the first footage from the upcoming miniseries, revealing that Earth will serve as the battlefield when the Sea Devils, an ancient aquatic species, decide to emerge from their centuries-long hiding place. This race, with a civilization that dates back to the dawn of humanity, has coexisted for millions of years alongside other ancient earth dwellers, such as the Silurians.
With the Doctor absent and humanity left to fend for itself, the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (UNIT) steps in to deal with the crisis. The international team aims to either coexist with or combat the Sea Devils. The five-episode miniseries explores the conflicts that arise from the clash between the land and the sea.
Several familiar faces from Doctor Who will reprise their roles for the miniseries. This includes Jemma Redgrave, Alexander Devrient, and Ruth Madeley as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Colonel Ibrahim, and Shirley Ann Bingham, respectively. Colin McFarlane will also make an appearance, reprising his role as General Austin Pierce from the third season of Torchwood.
Additionally, the miniseries will feature two beloved Doctor Who actors, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Russell Tovey, in new roles. Mbatha-Raw, known for her role as Martha Jones' sister, Tish, will portray a mysterious vanguard of the Sea Devils' return, while Tovey, who previously appeared in the 2007 holiday special "Voyage of the Damned," will play Barclay, a human tasked with leading humanity's response.
The War Between Land and the Sea is set to launch in the UK on the BBC and internationally on Disney+, with a tentative release date in 2026.
