The Tragic Sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975’s Deadly Storm
One of the worst maritime disasters on the Great Lakes struck on 10 November 1975. The SS Edmund Fitzgerald, a massive freighter, vanished during a violent storm on Lake Superior. All 29 crew members were lost when the ship sank without warning in the heart of the tempest.
The Edmund Fitzgerald set off from Superior, Wisconsin, at 2:15 p.m. on 9 November 1975. Its destination was Detroit, carrying a full load of iron ore pellets. Within hours, the vessel found itself caught in a ferocious storm system known as the Gales of November.
The sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald remains one of the deadliest shipwrecks in Great Lakes history. The disaster highlighted the extreme dangers posed by the region’s sudden, violent storms. No wreckage or survivors were recovered in the immediate aftermath.
