Japan's newest addition to the Epic Hikes Club is full of surprises, as the Mutsu Coastal Trail stretches over 1,000 kilometers along Honshu's northeastern Pacific coast. The 600-mile trail was officially launched in 2019 as part of initiatives to attract more tourists to the Tohoku region, which was heavily impacted by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The route's name harks back to ancient times, when the northeastern part of Japan was known as "Michinoku," meaning "End of the Road."
While the Mutsu Coastal Trail may not be as well-known as other famous hiking routes in Japan, it stands out for its undiscovered adventures and rich cultural experiences.
Unveiling the Mysteries of Michinoku
Robin Lewis, a British-Japanese man, is no stranger to the trail. He is the founder of the Michinoku Trail Walker Project, a website that aims to help others explore the trail. Lewis, a seasoned long-distance hiker, finds the trail unique because of its relative obscurity, even in Japan.
"Only 2% of international tourists visit the Tohoku region," Lewis shared with CNN Travel. "Seeking out lesser-known trails has always been exciting for me."
Adventure with a Purpose
Lewis has a personal connection to the Tohoku region, as his mother's family hails from Miyagi Prefecture, one of the four prefectures along the trail. Witnessing the devastation caused by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami made a lasting impact on him, inspiring him to volunteer and conduct research on natural disaster recovery worldwide.
"I first heard about the Mutsu Coast Trail in 2015. It resonated with me, combining my passion for disaster recovery support in the Tohoku region with my love for outdoor activities and exploration," Lewis explained.
His first attempt on the trail back in 2017 left him eager for more, leading him to complete the entire trail in 2019. The journey spanned over 1,000 kilometers.
With a camera in hand, Lewis documented his adventures, shared his experiences online, and even delivered a TEDx talk on his journey and the heartwarming experiences he encountered along the way.
"The global response and interest were far more than I could ever have imagined," he recalled. "As more people expressed interest in exploring the trail, I decided to create the Michinoku Trail Walker Project website to help and guide others."

The Mutsu Coastal Trail offers more than just scenic hikes; it provides a glimpse into the resilience and spirit of the local communities. The trail's course is an invigorating blend of natural beauty, historical sites, and unique cultural spots.
Tourist destinations include the Iwate Tsunami Memorial Museum, Soma Nomaoi horse competition, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hiraizumi. Hikers will also have the opportunity to visit local sake breweries, enjoy regional delicacies, and experience onsen (hot springs) resorts alongside their journey.

With two primary starting points—Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture and Soma City in Fukushima Prefecture—hikers can choose between a guided tour or a self-guided adventure.
