The standout score in play at TPC Southwind Golf Course?
Justin Rose Sets Course Record at FedEx St. Jude Championship
Justin Rose, a seasoned professional on the PGA Tour, made history at the FedEx St. Jude Championship this year by shooting a 61 in the third round, a score that has only been matched four times since 1993 at TPC Southwind.
The course, a par 70 layout that stretches between 7,200 and 7,300 yards, has proven to be a challenging test for even the most skilled players. Rose's bogey-free 61 on Moving Day was a testament to his exceptional play, as he moved up the leaderboard.
The course record of 61 was first set in 1993 by Jay Delsing during the final round of the St. Jude Classic. Delsing's round was blemish-free, with 10 birdies. Another player to achieve this feat was Bob Estes, who shot 61 in the first round of the tournament in 2001. Estes led by three strokes at the time.
In 2001, Bob Estes also matched the course record of 61, setting the tone for a thrilling tournament. He went on to win the tournament by a single stroke from Bernhard Langer, with a total score of 17-under.
More recently, Tom Lewis carded a 61 in the third round of the 2020 FedEx St. Jude Championship. Unfortunately, further details about Lewis's performance or tournament outcome were not provided.
TPC Southwind is one of the TPC courses in the United States where the FedEx St. Jude Championship is held. The tournament is a regular stop on the PGA Tour calendar.
Interestingly, Braden Thornberry, now a professional on the PGA Tour, also carded a 61 during the final round of the Memphis Golf Association Junior Invitational. However, Thornberry played the course 1,000 yards shorter than the pros do in PGA Tour events, which gave him an 18-shot victory in that tournament.
Rose's 68 in the fourth round left him in a share of 20th place. While he didn't take home the tournament win this year, his 61 is undoubtedly a memorable moment in the history of TPC Southwind.
