Water Consumed in Thuringia: A Quick Breakdown
It's no secret that Thuringia's residents aren't heavy water drinkers. In contrast to the nationwide average of 126 liters per day, Thurringians average just 96.4 liters daily, according to the local statistical office.
In the year 2022, a total of 118 million cubic meters of H2O was drawn from the state. Unlike other federal states, Thuringia relies heavily on lakes and reservoirs for a whopping 45.6% of its drinking water, while most other states primarily tap into groundwater resources.
The largest consumers of this water are private households, including small businesses, who collectively snatched up 74.1 million cubic meters in 2022. Other significant consumers include commercial enterprises, public institutions, healthcare facilities, and agriculture, who gobbled up a total of 19.8 million cubic meters.
Despite a slight increase in water consumption per head in 2022 compared to 2019, Thurringians still underconsume water significantly compared to the nationwide average. The increased consumption was predominantly by residents.
Water management in private households and commercial sectors becomes even more crucial given these figures. If you're curious about the prices these sectors pay for water, they fork out €1.83 per cubic meter on average (2022), but regional differences, such as infrastructure and local regulations, play a part.
