In the world of film, stories are often inspired by real-life experiences, and that's no different for the upcoming psychological horror film, "Shark Bait" (2022). This intriguing project, written by Nick Saltrese and directed by James Nunn, has won the Best Pitch Award at the Melbourne International Film Festival's 37o South Market.

The story of "Shark Bait" centres around a group of carefree teens—Nat, Tom, Milly, Tyler, and Greg—who spend their spring break at a Spanish-speaking seaside location. After partying, they impulsively take two parked jetskis out to sea early in the morning. The ensuing events are filled with tension and danger as they encounter sharks during their escapade.

Beyond this basic plot setup, a related project on "Shark Bait" delves deeper into psychological and cultural themes. This project, inspired by the experiences of writer Nick Lacey, follows a young Irish photographer embroiled in family secrets and primal shark-fishing rituals.

The main cast of "Shark Bait" includes Holly Earl as Nat, Jack Trueman as Tom, Catherine Hannay, Malachi Pullar-Latchman, and Thomas Flynn. This film fits within the shark horror genre, which is prolific but often requires unique angles to stand out. With its character dynamics and suspense, "Shark Bait" aims to bring something fresh to the table.

In other production news, "Spinners", a New Zealand-Australia co-production, has also been making waves. Written by Anthony McCarten based on his novel of the same name, "Spinners" centers on a small-town teenager who claims to be impregnated by an alien, and a librarian determined to find the truth. Emma Slade of Firefly Films and McCarten are the New Zealand co-producers of this project, while Brian Rosen and SuArmstrong are the Australian producers.

From Unicorn Films, Lizette Atkins will attend the Production Financing Market (PFM) with two projects: "Modern Lovers", an erotic, psychological thriller about a farm boy and the destitute mother of two with whom he falls in love, and "Remember Me", a film about which details are currently unavailable. Producers Brian Rosen of SIXTYFOURSIXTY, and Lizette Atkins of Unicorn Films, also won places at PFM, plus A$1,000 each.

As the film industry continues to evolve, these exciting projects serve as a testament to the creativity and innovation that drive it forward. Whether it's the deep, psychological exploration of "Shark Bait" or the intriguing premise of "Spinners", there's no denying that these films are poised to make a significant impact.
