In the icy grips of December 1989, a shimmering gold cargo, whispered secrets, and cold-blooded intrigue seize the sleepy Harz region as the Berlin Wall crumbles. Former Stasi operative Inka Sassner, scorned by a shifty NVA soldier who'd swindled her precious fortune, meanly muscles her way into St. Andreasberg. Her target? A man under an alias, believed to be residing there - a man long assumed to have snatched the golden loot and vanished for nineteen years without a trace.
Determined to reclaim what's hers, Inka ruthlessly seeks out her quarry's godfather, Ernst. But the dusty creaks of her victim's humble dwelling offer no clues. With a snarl, Inka brutally executes Ernst and leaves his bewildered neighbor, Rudi, unconscious on the floor. The local enforcer, Koops, an eccentric man caught between the law and the rogue, can't shake the unsettling feeling that he's merely a chess piece in a far more insidious game.
The gold thief's enigma intensifies as Thorsten Lehnert, alias Timo Warnau, shrouds himself in mystery. Detlef, Kim's stepfather, and her mother quietly tiptoe around her curious inquiries, casting cold doubts on their loyalty. As the young Kim grapples with her fragmented family tree and her burning quest for the truth, Inka and Koops engage in a cat-and-mouse game that threatens to shatter the very foundations upon which the town rests.
