A Booming Era for Saxony's Artisanship

The Saxon artisan sector is watching a significant boost this year, as the Dresden Chamber of Crafts reports a substantial climb in new apprenticeship agreements. With a 6.2% increase over last year's numbers, a staggering 1,994 fresh contracts were signed, far surpassing the 1,877 from the previous year. This marks the fourth consecutive year of increased apprentices in the region.

Andreas Brzezinski, the CEO of the Dresden Chamber of Crafts, shared his thoughts, "The rise in apprenticeships reflects the growing value businesses place on training, and young people perceive craftsmanship in the area as an attractive option for education and careers, boasting numerous opportunities." He added that even latecomers can join an apprenticeship in craftsmanship, as certain businesses are still in search of suitable candidates for the ongoing training year.

In the regions of Meißen, Bautzen, Görlitz, Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge, and Dresden's state capital, apprenticeships are supported in over 80 different craft occupations.

The Wave in Southwestern Saxony

The city of Chemnitz recorded a total of 1,939 training contracts for 96 distinct craft professions. This marks an increase compared to last year, with 1,884 contracts signed at the same time. The rise compared to the previous year was a significant 2.9%.

Once again, vehicle mechatronics, with 410 new training contracts, headed the list of favored training professions, followed closely by electronics (153), plant mechanics for sanitation, heating, and air conditioning (127), carpenters (93), and painters and varnishers (76). Interestingly, 390 of these apprentices were female, while 1,549 were male. This year, 207 training contracts were also awarded to High School graduates.

Currently, the Chamber of Crafts' training place exchange still lists 464 vacant apprenticeships, providing businesses the chance to advertise their open positions. Chamber of Crafts President Frank Wagner remarked, "These positions could potentially fill even more if they were also occupied. Unfortunately, there's still a shortage of well-trained, skilled workers."

Businesses in Dresden, sensing this growing interest in craftsmanship, are also stepping up their production lines, investing further in training to meet the demand. This rise in apprenticeships isn't confined to Dresden, as Southwestern Saxony has also witnessed an upswing in training contracts in industries such as vehicle mechatronics and electronics.

Historically, craft guilds have played a pivotal role in nurturing apprenticeships in Saxony, ensuring high standards of quality and skill in response to the demand for skilled craftsmen. In addition, economic factors, government support, cultural revival, educational initiatives, and community engagement have all played their part in the increase in apprenticeships. In the vibrant heart of Saxony, it's an invigorating time to begin your journey as a master artisan!
