The Prospect for Continuation of 'Star Wars Battlefront' Series

Here's a fresh take on the article, incorporating the enrichment data and adapting the tone to be more engaging and informal:

A while back, gamers and Star Wars enthusiasts have been clamoring for another installment of the beloved Star Wars Battlefront game franchise. Lately, the player count for DICE's Battlefront II has been growing on PC, and fans are eager to capitalize on the resurgence with a global live event to bring attention to the game and celebrate the unwavering passion of the Battlefront community.

This revival of interest in Star Wars Battlefront was sparked by Star Wars Day (May 4) and Andor star Muhannad Ben Amor (who played Wilmon) expressing his desire for another entry: "Grew up playing Battlefront II; been a veteran since day one, let's hope for Battlefront III."

Over the past two decades, the multiplayer shooter series has had two distinct lives. Its first entries, released during the Star Wars prequel era, were developed by the late Pandemic Studios, while the later ones came from Battlefield developer DICE. Regrettably, neither has ever made it to number three. One version of Battlefront III was in development from various studios, including Timesplitters creator Free Radical Design, but it never saw the light of day.

LucasArts attempted to revive the series with an online-only entry, a smaller multiplayer title, and a fourth game set in an alternate universe where Obi-Wan and Luke were Sith Lords. Sadly, none of these projects panned out. Once DICE stopped supporting its Battlefront II in 2020, the series was suddenly missing in action once more.

The questions of whether Star Wars Battlefront can return and why it should return are intricately connected, and challenging to answer. Developing games for the Star Wars franchise has occasionally been a demanding task. Some of the most famous Star Wars games are the ones that never came to be, like the Boba Fett-starring 1313 or third entries for Knights of the Old Republic and Force Unleashed, two sub-series that concurrently existed with Battlefront. Even EA encountered challenges; it canceled a pirate-focused project from Visceral Games and Motive Studios, and more recently shelved a first-person shooter centered on the Mandalorian being developed at Respawn, creators of the acclaimed Star Wars Jedi games.

DICE is currently hard at work on the next Battlefield game, with other EA studios acting as support. Given this, it's highly unlikely that another Battlefront title could originate from EA, let alone any time soon. Mats Holm, a former live producer on Battlefront II, recently shared this sentiment on Reddit, instead suggesting a remaster of the previous game as a stepping stone towards developing a proper sequel. Ideally, the remaster would be a potential foot in the door, but the challenge lies with EA. Although Pandemic's Battlefront games have been remastered, Electronic Arts can be rather selective when it comes to choosing projects for remastering or remaking.

Since 2019's Fallen Order, Star Wars has primarily focused on single-player titles like Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws and 2026's Zero Company from Bit Reactor. Other than the space combat-focused Star Wars Squadrons, EA hasn't committed to Star Wars multiplayer again, perhaps because the backlash against Battlefront II's initial monetization was so vindictive and heavily criticized. Consequently, other publishers now have the opportunity to create Star Wars licensed games. Furthermore, the recent "Galactic Battle" tie-in event in Fortnite throughout numerous in-game skins for various franchise characters and a crucial plot-revealing audio log that hints at Palpatine's reemergence for Rise of Skywalker have solidified Fortnite as the most important multiplayer shooter for the Star Wars franchise.

Initially, Star Wars Battlefront served as a hub for the entire Star Wars universe. Battlefront II was marketed as a unification point for all three trilogies, and the developers put in all the stops following the game's relaunch to incorporate content from the prequels and sequels, Rogue One, and Solo. Since DICE ended support for Battlefront II in 2019, Star Wars has not made consistent progress, which makes it questionable whether a genuine Battlefront III is a viable prospect.

By 2026, The Mandalorian & Grogu are bound to have some kind of Fortnite tie-in, as will critical darling Maul: Shadow Lord and the upcoming Starfighter film. At this point, Star Wars finds itself ensnared in Epic Games' web, and it seems unlikely that Disney will sever ties anytime soon.

For all its loving fans, the dream of Star Wars Battlefront III may never truly die. However, as Star Wars enters a new phase of its life with promises of more films and shows, and an intended focus on the time after the sequels, it remains to be seen whether Battlefront III fits seamlessly into the franchise's plans and which studios will be involved at a time when online games, no matter their scale, are often quickly disregarded.
