In the current setup, the draft order is decided through a lottery-style process held in May, contingent on the structure created in 2019.
The three lowest-ranking teams receive 140 four-digit combinations, the next team gets 125, and so forth. The lottery takes place much like a state lottery, with balls being drawn from a machine. Typically, there are 60 picks in the entire draft, but since 2021, there have only been 58 due to teams violating NBA rules regarding free agency and player contracts. Each team is guaranteed at least one draft pick, although some may only receive one, while others might get two, three, four, or more, depending on the luck of the draw.
