The Process of NBA Draft and Draft Lottery Explained

Hype and excitement abound when it comes to the NBA and its shiny new recruits. These young phenoms could be the missing link, catapulting your team towards glory and countless victories. From a betting perspective, the potential windfall from wagering on these giftedathletes is substantial. Let's delve into the thrilling world of the NBA Draft and uncover what makes it so captivating.

The NBA Draft: A Game Changer

The NBA Draft offers teams the opportunity to snag fresh talents direct from the collegiate ranks or from international leagues. This annual event takes place after the NBA Finals, usually around mid-June, an occasion you can catch live on ESPN, ABC, Sling, or YouTube TV. If you're a fan of March Madness, you might recognize some faces in the draft.

A Rich History of NBA Drafts

The NBA Draft has been around since 1947, and legends have emerged from its selection process. In 1984, we saw the likes of Akeem Olajuwon, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, John Stockton, and Oscar Schmidt. History repeated itself in 1996, with Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, Joe Bryant, and Steve Nash gracing the stage. Fast forward to 2003, and the iconic LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony, and Dwyane Wade were among those chosen.

Initially, the NBA was known as the BAA, with a mere eight teams competing. The draft operated over nine rounds, with 75 players selected, all from American basketball colleges. By the 1970s, the draft opened its doors to foreign players, followed by an influx in the 1990s and 2000s. In 2002, 17 international players were drafted, with only three having experience in American colleges.

The draft landscape underwent a transformation in 2006, as high school players were banned from entering the draft. The revised rules stipulated that only high school graduates who were a year removed from graduation and were 19 years old by the end of the calendar year would be eligible to declare for the draft.

How the NBA Draft Lottery Works

The NBA Draft is divided into two phases – the Draft Lottery and the Draft itself. In its early days, the worst teams in the league secured top picks. However, due to tanking allegations, the lottery was introduced in 1985. In the current setup, the draft order is decided through a lottery-style process held in May, contingent on the structure created in 2019.

The three lowest-ranking teams receive 140 four-digit combinations, the next team gets 125, and so forth. The lottery takes place much like a state lottery, with balls being drawn from a machine. The team with the winning combination on the first drawn ball grabs the first pick in the upcoming draft, while the winner of the second combination follows suit, and the third gets the third pick, and so on. This gives all the bottom-ranking teams an equal shot at acquiring the desirable first pick.

The NBA Draft Schedule

Once the draft order is determined, the draft spans two days, although it used to only last one day. Typically, there are 60 picks in the entire draft, but since 2021, there have only been 58 due to teams violating NBA rules regarding free agency and player contracts. Each team is guaranteed at least one draft pick, although some may only receive one, while others might get two, three, four, or more, depending on the luck of the draw.

Betting on the NBA Draft

With the draft order in place, online sports books start offering bets on the upcoming draft. Bets may range from predicting the first overall pick, which player will make the top three, exact position pick, and several other outcomes. If you have a favorite from March Madness, there's a good chance they could feature in the following draft (provided they meet the eligibility criteria, of course). Don't forget to consider international players and those from other professional youth leagues within the U.S.
