The PGA's opening event for 2026 will not take place at the water-starved Kapalua resort.

The Sentry Tournament of Champions, the first PGA Tour signature event of the season, will not be held at The Plantation Course at Kapalua in 2026. This decision comes as more than 90% of Hawaii is affected by drought conditions, and water conservation mandates have been imposed.

The ongoing drought has significantly compromised the condition of Kapalua Resort's course, making it impossible for the PGA Tour to ensure tour-level playing conditions for the January 8-11 event. As a result, the tournament will not be contested at The Plantation Course at Kapalua.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green supports this decision, prioritising water protection and community support over the tournament. Governor Green has been vocal about the severe impact of the drought, stating that over 140,000 residents have been affected.

Despite the cancellation of the Sentry Tournament of Champions, the PGA Tour plans to continue with the Sony Open in Hawaii as scheduled. The 2026 Sony Open is planned to be held at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

The field for the tournament will include winners of the 2024 event and players from the top 50 of the 2025 season points standings. Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, the winner of the 2025 Sentry Tournament of Champions, will not be defending his title at Kapalua this year.

As for the 2026 Sentry Tournament of Champions, no new site has been announced yet. The new venue for the tournament remains the Plantation Course at Kapalua, Maui, although no official announcement has been made regarding a new site for the event next year.

This decision by the PGA Tour underscores the importance of water conservation in Hawaii, a vital issue that continues to challenge the island state.
