The Outlook for 'Star Wars Battlefront' in the Coming Days

Gamers and Star Wars enthusiasts are clamoring for a new installment of the popular Star Wars Battlefront series, with recent renewed interest in Star Wars Battlefront II sparked by a day-long global event aiming to boost player numbers and showcase the game's community's enduring spirit.

This resurgence comes on the heels of Star Wars' May 4 holiday and actor Muhannad Ben Amor (from Andor) expressing his long-standing love for the series, encouraging a Battlefront III. Over the past two decades, the multiplayer shooter franchise has experienced two lives - the early entries developed by Pandemic Studios and the more recent editions by DICE. Despite the hype, neither series reached a third game.

Manufacturing games based on the Star Wars property has had its challenges throughout the years. Many of the most iconic Star Wars games are actually the ones that never materialized, such as 1313 and third entries for Knights of the Old Republic and Force Unleashed. Even Electronic Arts (EA) has faced hurdles, having cancelled a project from Visceral Games and Motive Studios, and more recently scrapping a Mandalorian-focused first-person shooter from Respawn.

As of now, DICE is heavily focused on the next Battlefield game, and EA's other studios are providing support. Thus, another Battlefront game from EA seems extremely unlikely in the near future. A former live producer on Battlefront II has even suggested a remaster of the previous game as a sensible first step before developing a new sequel, ideally with some members from the original team involved. However, whether EA, which previously remastered the Pandemic-made Battlefront games, would be willing to pursue this idea remains to be seen.

Since the 2019 release of Fallen Order, Star Wars has primarily focused on single-player titles like Star Wars Outlaws and 2026's Zero Company from Bit Reactor. Star Wars Squadrons is the only exception among multiplayer titles. EA's reluctance to commit to Star Wars multiplayer could stem from the controversy surrounding the monetization of Battlefront II, which was heavily criticized in its early stages. Moreover, the collaboration between Star Wars and Fortnite has been successful, with the franchise gaining significant exposure through Fortnite's "Galactic Battle" event, in-game skins, and plot-important audio log in Rise of Skywalker.

In essence, while there's certainly fan interest and intrigue, officially, there's no information on the development of a Star Wars Battlefront III from Electronic Arts or DICE. Some speculate that if development were to begin soon, a potential release might be predicted for 2025. For now, fans will have to wait, though the popular battle royale Fortnite may still hold the "Star Wars" multiplayer crown due to its close partnership with the franchise.

Io9 and Gizmodo have speculated about the possibility of a new installation in the popular Star Wars Battlefront series, with fans eagerly anticipating a third game in the franchise. Despite several attempts to create multiplayer shooter games based on the Star Wars property, none have succeeded in reaching a third game, including the early entries developed by Pandemic Studios and the more recent editions by DICE. If a Star Wars Battlefront III were to be developed in the future, GamesRadar+ suggests that a remaster of the previous game could be a sensible first step, ideally with some members from the original team involved.
