The Dead South Brings Raucous Bluegrass to Killesberg Open Air Stage

Canadian bluegrass band, The Dead South, made a raucously grim impression at the Killesberg Open Air Stage last Friday night. The band, known for their raw, energetic bluegrass-folk mix, performed as the opening act for the legendary Iron Maiden.

The Dead South, founded in 2012, is primarily known for their bluegrass and folk sound, featuring acoustic instruments like the banjo, mandolin, and cello. The band's music includes fast-paced songs and slower numbers, with a committed orchestration that appeals to European audiences.

The band's style is similar to how Guildo Horn interpreted Schlager, bringing a fresh and energetic twist to traditional music. The Dead South's bluegrass music has a punk attitude and whiskey-thirsty, love-hungry lyrics, as evidenced by their original songs and popular covers.

One of their covers, a bluegrass adaptation of System of a Down's "Chop Suey!", showcases their ability to bridge genres without having originated in grunge themselves. Contrary to rumors, there is no widely documented evolution from grunge to bluegrass for The Dead South; instead, their origins and development are rooted in bluegrass and folk traditions.

The Dead South's concert lasted for 100 minutes, featuring songs like "Travellin' Man", "Snake Man Pt. 2", "In Hell I'll Be In Good Company", and "Broken Cowboy". The opening act also included a guitar duo named Striking Matches, with one member performing a wild solo.

The concert took place on the Cannstatter Wasen, attracting around 45,000 fans. During the opening act, someone in the audience released soap bubbles, adding a whimsical touch to the raucous atmosphere.

Iron Maiden took the stage later that evening, performing to a packed crowd in Stuttgart. The Dead South's energetic bluegrass performance set the stage for a night of powerful music, demonstrating their appeal to a diverse audience.
