Ready, Set, Snow Down! Germany Aims for '31 Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf
German ski authorities aim to organize the Nordic World Championships in Oberstdorf in 2031. - The Nordic World Cup in Oberstdorf in 2031 is the objective of the German Ski Association
Hey there, ski lovers! The German Ski Association is stepping up their game, planning a bid for the 2031 World Championships in Ski Jumping, Cross-Country Skiing, and Nordic Combined. The chosen location? None other than the scenic town of Oberstdorf.
But what about skiing in Saxony? It's a valid question! Initially, a bid with Oberwiesenthal and Klingenthal in Saxony was on the cards too. However, after a roundtable discussion among the organizers, they collectively decided that Oberstdorf would be their pick, as per the DSV. Heiko Krause, President of the Ski Association Saxony, expressed this decision in a DSV statement stating, "After extensively considering Germany's bid potential and the infrastructure requirements for a World Championship, we've agreed to bid for the location, Oberstdorf." Yet, Krause emphasizes that "our ultimate goal is to bring the Nordic Ski World Championships to Saxony in the near future."
Originally, the German bid for 2033 was in the works. However, a change in strategy came about when the Austrian towns of Ramsau and Bischofshofen chose to forego bidding for 2031. The shorter prep time now points towards Oberstdorf, a town that has previously hosted the World Championships in 1987, 2005, and 2021. The 2021 event, held amidst the corona pandemic, was notably remembered as a 'ghost' World Championship without spectators.
The final decision for the 2031 championships is expected in about a year. The competition? Slovenia's Planica, where World Championships haven't been held since 2023. Though Oberstdorf is making a strong case, the Slovenian bid is still in the race, making the final outcome uncertain. Stay tuned for the winning bid announcement in June 2026!
