The NightLÄND research highlights the significant role of nighttime activities in the economy

In a groundbreaking development, the 'NightLÄND' study, conducted by Prognos on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg, has concluded that suitable strategies and appropriate measures can now be taken locally to bolster the nighttime economy.

The study emphasises the importance and potential of the nighttime economy in attracting highly qualified professionals and fostering cultural diversity, social cohesion, and tourism. It also highlights that the nighttime economy significantly contributes to the quality of life in Baden-Württemberg.

The nighttime economy, encompassing establishments such as bars, restaurants, clubs, theaters, cinemas, festivals, open-air events, live concerts, and late-night dining experiences, generates approximately 9 billion euros in annual turnover and employs over 220,000 people.

The study analysed the particularities of the nighttime economy, the origin of guests, the typical nightlife, the role of 'Night Governance,' and the challenges faced. It also offers current trends and opportunities for improving the current situation of the nighttime economy and funding possibilities.

One of the key recommendations proposed in the study is for nighttime economic businesses to adapt their business models and offerings to changing needs and reach new target groups. Additionally, reducing bureaucratic hurdles for these businesses is also suggested.

Networking with neighbouring industries such as hotels, daytime gastronomy, or tourism can help in developing and implementing a good nighttime economy, according to the study. The study also underscores the importance of a sufficient range of evening and nighttime events, gastronomy, bars, clubs, festivals, and larger events for the economy, society, and tourism.

Dr. Patrick Rapp, State Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Tourism, emphasised the importance of the study, stating that it can serve as an impetus to think about economic and cultural policy more holistically.

The study, 'NightLÄND,' provides numbers on 'life after eight' for the entire country for the first time. The comprehensive report is available in PDF format.
