KUCHING, May 30 - In a move to expedite the completion of five stalled projects in Sarawak, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has announced that these projects, under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) during the 11th and 12th Malaysia Plans (11MP and 12MP), will be attended to during the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) period.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, explained that delays were due to site issues such as permits, land acquisition, and overlapping pipe alignments, as well as adverse weather conditions. He emphasized that the completion of these "sick projects" must be achieved within the 13MP period, from Rolling Plan 1 to 5.
An example of a non-sick but delayed project set to be addressed under the 13MP is the Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM) in Lawas. This project, despite receiving approval, has yet to commence. In such cases, Ahmad Zahid stressed the importance of their implementation in the 13MP Rolling Plan 1.
Ahmad Zahid made these statements during a media conference, following a special meeting to coordinate the implementation of KKDW rural development projects in Sarawak. The meeting aimed to ensure the local population can benefit from essential facilities and infrastructure.
Additionally, the Deputy Prime Minister affirmed plans to establish the MARA Poly-Tech College (KPTM) of Sarawak, either in Kuching or Samarahan, to provide more educational opportunities for state youths at pre-diploma, diploma, and foundation levels. The goal is to accommodate a total of 1,000 students by 2028, with the initial intake of about 200 students and a gradual growth to 500 students annually.
The decision to rebuild the houses damaged in the January landslide incident in Kampung Lereng Bukit, Miri will be actioned post-Gawai Day celebrations. The state government agency responsible for the implementation has secured a suitable plot of land for the rebuilding efforts, as determined by the Sarawak Land Custody and Development Authority (PELITA).
Earlier reports from the KKDW revealed that Sarawak has received an allocation of RM3.2 billion under the 12MP, involving the implementation of 403 programs and projects with a total project cost of RM21.73 billion. A considerable portion, 178 projects or 44.71 percent, is still in the "Pre-Implementation" status, while 155 projects have been approved since 2021.
The above-mentioned projects are slated for urgent implementation under the 13MP, with close monitoring of their progress by the Deputy Minister of KKDW. The emphasis is on prioritizing and completing these projects, which have experienced delays, within the stipulated 13MP timeline.
