Malaysia Bolsters Industry-Driven Vocational Education for Competitive Workforce

KOTA KINABALU, May 30 - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has highlighted the need for Malaysia to focus more on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs to produce a competent workforce for current and future markets.

During the launch of the first phase of the Esteel Entreprise project, he underlined the importance of flexibility and industry-relevance in TVET programs, rather than relying on bureaucracy and outdated technical rules.

"Innovative training initiatives can equip our workers with the skills demanded by the industry, ensuring a better match between education and employment opportunities," he said.

The PM suggested that companies take a leading role in training individuals to meet their specific industry requirements. "Imagine a scenario where employers tailor training programs to their needs, ensuring that their workforce is adequately skilled and ready to perform," he proposed.

He emphasized the need to bridge the gap between the skills taught by central agencies and the skills required by industries, highlighting past collaborations in Kuala Lumpur's High Tech area, the Johor-Singapore Economic Zone, and Melaka as examples of successful partnerships.

Anwar opined that such partnerships should be replicated in Sabah, particularly in light of upcoming large-scale investments. "Empowering industries to shape training programs enables us to address market needs more effectively," he asserted.
