"The Ministry of External Affairs confirms the arrival of a temporary government in Nepal, pledging ongoing backing for tranquility and equilibrium."
In a significant turn of events, Nepal has welcomed a new interim government, led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki. The change comes after the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, following widespread demonstrations led by the Gen Z generation.
The protests, which began on September 8, were triggered by the Nepalese government's ban on social media. The youth, frustrated by corruption, lack of accountability, and the perceived failure of political elites, took to the streets in a revolution that has shaken the country. The protests resulted in 74 deaths due to police using lethal force.
India, a close neighbour and ally, has welcomed the new government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a teleconversation with Prime Minister Karki on Thursday, extended condolences for the loss of lives during the protests and assured India's readiness to strengthen ties. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India reaffirmed its steadfast support to Nepal, expressing a commitment to further strengthen special ties and support Nepal in its efforts to restore peace and stability.
PM Karki, the first woman Prime Minister of Nepal, is backed by the Gen Z-led movement. Her appointment was collectively endorsed by protesters, citing her integrity and independence.
Sushila Karki, a former Chief Justice of Nepal, has a strong determination for accountable, responsive, and corruption-free governance, reflecting the aspirations of the youth. Her tenure as Interim Prime Minister will end in the first week of March 2026, following elections for a new executive head.
On a personal note, PM Karki conveyed her greetings and best wishes to PM Modi on his 75th birthday. She also extended felicitations on the upcoming National Day of Nepal.
As Nepal navigates through this period of change, the world watches with anticipation, hoping for a brighter and more peaceful future for the Himalayan nation.
