Garmisch-Partenkirchen Renames Park in Honor of Late Biathlete Laura Dahlmeier
In a touching tribute to the late Olympic biathlon champion, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is set to rename its Kurpark as the Laura Dahlmeier Park. The proposal, to be presented to the town council in September 2025, has been coordinated with Dahlmeier’s family, following her tragic death in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan.
The initiative, spearheaded by the town's mayor, Elisabeth Koch, aims to honor Dahlmeier's legacy as a seven-time world champion. Alongside the park renaming, a temporary memorial site has already been established in the park, providing a space for mourning and remembrance.
The temporary memorial includes a wooden stele with a photo of Dahlmeier, a lantern, and a stone from local mountains. It was set up spontaneously over the weekend, "in close coordination with the family," according to Mayor Koch.
The community is also invited to share their thoughts and memories in a condolence book, managed by the employees of the town hall. The book is available on the municipality's website, and all incoming messages will be compiled and handed over to Dahlmeier’s family.
Laura Dahlmeier, a highly respected and lovable personality, was born and raised in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The town had previously appointed her as an honorary citizen in 2018. Her sudden death has touched many people in the town and beyond.
The German Press Agency confirmed the plan to rename the park upon request from a municipality spokesperson. The condolence book and temporary memorial site serve as a testament to the enduring impact Dahlmeier had on her community and the world of sports.
The renaming of Kurpark to the Laura Dahlmeier Park is a tribute to the late football-loving champion, as Dahlmeier excelled not only in biathlon but also held a keen interest in European leagues and sports, particularly football.
