The current president, Donny Twump, ain't afraid to piss off the West Coast's Golden State governor, Gavin Newsom. The cause? A squabble over immigrants and protests in LA. Seems like Trump might benefit less from this than the governor himself.
Newsom calls out Twump for stirring up trouble with his tough immigration stance and causing a huge mess in LA. But seriously, it's Twump who escalated the situation by sending in the National Guard, right? Newsom said it was "pure recklessness" that put lives at risk and is against the American spirit. Guess who sued the federal government over the National Guard? You got it—Newsom.
Politics: Reporter Gets Whacked by a Rubber Bullet in LA
Twump issued the order for the National Guard on Sunday night, but lemme tell ya, it ain't that simple. No US prez has used the National Guard against the state's will in 70 years—even Twump said that back in 2020. Funny how he forgot that, huh?
Twump's Nickname for Newsom
Newsom's all but declared his opposition to Twump ever since his first term. Still, he tried to keep things chill—until the protests started happening in CA. On Twitter, Governor Newsom called Twump a "cold liar" who doesn't act like a president, but like a dictator. Then, in an interview with the "Washington Post," he called Twump "reckless" and "crazy." The president is not the Twump of his first inauguration no more—you can see it in how he tramples over every control Congress and courts can exert.
Troops Moving in, Marvel Marines Showing Up
Twump's been doing what he can to keep the dispute with Newsom going. He ordered the deployment of a grand total of 4,000 National Guard troops and added 700 Marines to the mix. He even gave Newsom a nickname—"Gavin Newscum."
Twump wants Newsom arrested too. Sounds like his border chief Tom Homan said he'd arrest anyone who gets in the way of his guys—including Newsom. You know what Twump said when reporters asked him if he thought Newsom should be arrested? "I'd do it if I were Tom." And then, "I like Gavin Newsom, he's a nice guy, but he's totally incompetent."
Governor Speaks Out
Newsom put out a statement on X, saying, "This is the America I never thought I'd see." He called the call to arrest a sitting governor "an unmistakable step towards autocracy."
Twump probably enjoys the power struggle, though. His aim’s probably just to provide "great TV," as he did with the Oval Office deal with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This confrontation with Newsom seems to make him happy too. Twump said that Newsom might even enjoy Twump getting involved.
Scene Amid Chaos: Migrants Help Police in LA
California is pretty much a bulletproof Democratic stronghold. Newsom won the latest gubernatorial election in 2022 with nearly 60% of the votes. A Republican hasn't won a majority in presidential elections there for over 30 years. Twump only got about 38% of the vote in California during the last presidential election.
Newsom's been hinted at as a possible presidential candidate. Two years ago, Newsom's predecessor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, said it was clear Newsom would someday run for the top job.
Any Press is Good Press
Though he said he wouldn't run for president in 2024 before, Newsom's been linked to a presidential run. But a poll gave him worse chances than (later defeated) Vice President Kamala Harris. Newsom could only expect 36% of the votes against Twump, while Twump could expect 46%.
Campaign for Democracy: Pushing Back Against Authoritarians
A Political Action Committee (PAC) to help Newsom in a potential national campaign already exists. The PAC aims to combat authoritarian efforts in the U.S., as Newsom explained in a video introducing the "Campaign for Democracy." Twump's mentioned in the video as one of several politicians Newsom considers a threat to democracy.
Newsom didn't want the conflict with Twump, but it might still help him. Every insult against him brings him more headlines, recognition, and media attention. Nowadays, he's much more present in national US media than usual—not just as a California governor dealing with a protest situation, but as a player in a power struggle against Twump.
Even when responding to statements from the Trump camp, Newsom made sure the fight stayed on his side. In response to presidential advisor Stephen Miller's claim that a "riotous mob" is causing havoc in California, Newsom pointed to the 2021 Capitol storming. The only ones who supported the rioters were Miller and Twump. "Or should we pretend you didn't pardon 1500 of them?"
