In the on-going political chess match, President Trump is giving California Governor Gavin Newsom a run for his money. The White House's latest move? A power play that threatens to escalate the conflict between the two.
The blame game is out in full force. President Trump recklessly casts Governor Newsom as the one behind the violent protests in Los Angeles, exploiting California as the classic boogeyman against his immigration policy. Newsom, however, counters by pinning the whole fiasco on Trump's imprudent deployment of the National Guard.
"This reckless move put lives at risk," expresses Newsom, slamming Trump's actions as "un-American." In response, he's taken legal action against the US government, suing them in a federal court in San Francisco.
Politics | Reporting Under Fire
Trump’s controversial move to deploy the National Guard has been met with criticism, with no US president sending the National Guard against a state's wishes for the past 70 years. Even Trump himself claimed he doesn't have the power to do so - a quote Newsom leverages in his lawsuit against the White House.
The Name Game
Ever the showman, Trump has given Newsom a fitting moniker: "Gavin Newscum." Newsom, known for positioning himself as Trump's antithesis since his first term, has been candid in both his dealings with Trump and the public. When Trump infantilized California for the wildfires, Newsom kept his cool. It wasn't until the protests that he publicly criticized Trump and announced a lawsuit.
Baiting the Governor
Trump has goaded Newsom with provocative statements, openly considering watching him get arrested. Newsom, seemingly unfazed, labeled Trump a "cold-hearted liar" and "a dictator, not a president."
In a response to Trump's advisor Stephen Miller’s accusation of a "riotous mob" in California, Newsom pointed out the hypocrisy of the situation, referencing the storming of the Capitol in 2021. "Or should we act like you didn't pardon 1500 of them?" retorted Newsom.
A Power Play in the Making
It's unclear what Trump intends to achieve through his power struggle with Newsom, aside from the ever-popular tool for gaining attention, "great TV." This showdown could potentially benefit Newsom, whose presidential aspirations have long been speculated.
The most populous state is a Democratic stronghold, with Newsom winning the last gubernatorial election in 2022 with nearly 60 percent of the vote. For a Republican to win a presidential election there would be a first in over 30 years. Trump only received around 38 percent in California during the last election.
As the power struggle continues to unfold, every insult, every tweet, and every lawsuit keeps Gavin Newsom in the spotlight, boosting his national media exposure. Newsom, however, is cautious in fueling the conflict, using it to his advantage and positioning himself as a voice against authoritarianism.
"Amidst this political standoff, Governor Gavin Newsom has acknowledged the need for clear Community policy and Employment policy to address the escalating conflicts, particularly in light of President Trump's power play and the general-news situation."
"Moreover, politically, this escalating dispute between Donald Trump and Gavin Newsom can be seen as a strategy by Trump to gain attention, but for Newsom, it presents an opportunity to strengthen his national profile, further fueling his ambitious Employment policy and politics."
