A captivating tale of domestic suspense unfolds in the debut novel, "Best Day Ever," where Paul Strom, a charismatic, self-assured husband, invites his wife, Mia, for a nostalgic retreat to their lakeside abode. From the outset, he assures us of their blissful union, their flawless existence, and the idyllic nature of this day. However, the reality proves otherwise as Paul unveils himself to be...one of life's enigmatic characters.

The Ideal Marriage Holds No Reality, No Truth

In my latest twisted whodunit, Jill Is Not Happy, an outwardly sweet, controlling wife, Jill Tingley, embarks on a deceptive road trip with her college sweetheart and long-time husband, Jack. The couple seemingly has it all: a successful marriage, a beautiful home, and a college-bound daughter. However, beneath this charming façade, their relationship is far from perfect.

Turning the tables on traditional domestic thrillers, Jill is the Ripley in yoga pants, a dangerously calculating and untrustworthy narrator whose actions speak volumes. She will do anything to hold onto Jack, believing they are the picture-perfect traditional couple. As the story unfolds, we witness masterful manipulation, a labyrinthine web of secrets, and deadlier-than-normal marital mind games.

When I penned Jill Is Not Happy, I wanted to reveal the twisted side of seemingly perfect marriages. The illusion of loyalty, love, and happiness often masks something far more insidious brewing below the surface. I aimed to delve deep into the destructive power dynamics present in many domestic relationships, showcasing just how quickly appearance can morph into something sinister if left unchecked.

That obsession with unraveling the dark underbelly of a seemingly perfect marriage has been a constant in my work. I have come to see that the illusion of a dream relationship is tragically frail, and yet, we all cling to this elusive ideal.

Maybe there's a part of us that wants to believe in it, no matter the cost.

In my upcoming release, set for June 2025, I tackle this theme once more, this time through the eyes of a woman desperate to keep hold of her husband, no matter the consequences. Jill Is Not Happy invites readers to join Jill and Jack on a dark, suspenseful road trip that exposes the jaw-dropping lengths a manipulative spouse will go to preserve the fancy they've worked tirelessly to create.

Domestic suspense masterfully plays on the fine line between perception and reality. Its high stakes, unexpected twists, and stunning revelations are what draw readers in, offering a cathartic release from our own everyday concerns while simultaneously exploring the depths of our own fears and anxieties.

I believe readers are inexorably drawn to this genre not just for the chills and turns but because it offers a veiled mirror to our own lives. In reading about toxic relationships, we conveniently distance ourselves, reassuring ourselves that, "at least we're not them." It's a somewhat macabre comfort, but it's reassuring all the same.

I believe some of the most influential thrillers of our time share the same underlying question: what lurks beneath the polished exterior of marital bliss? Gillian Flynn captured the essence of this theme with Gone Girl, presenting us with Amy Dunne, a woman who used perfection as a weapon to mask her toxic nature. Alex Michaelides followed suit with The Silent Patient, while Shari Lapena and Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen continue to explore the darker side of matrimony.

Each author expertly navigates this tightrope between beauty and brutality, charm and chaos. And in my novels, I strive to walk the same line. Best Day Ever introduced the reader to a deceitful husband and a wife who fought to save her marriage, while my upcoming works will center around the unraveling life of a wife desperate to keep her husband. I am fascinated by the masks people wear and what happens when they slip away.

Love may seem blind, but suspense always sees through the deception. Which is why, in the end, I will continue to write, to explore the complexities of the human heart, and to unveil the darkness that festers beneath the surface. And readers, well, they'll be there, each turn of the page, hoping for some semblance of justice, redemption, or a shock we never expected. Because if there's one thing domestic suspense teaches us, it's that love can be blind and perilous-but suspense, my friends, is always one step ahead.

In my upcoming release, the reader will be invited to join Jill and Jack on a dark, suspenseful road trip, experiencing the chilling lengths a manipulative spouse will go to preserve the facade of their idealistic relationship (Jill Is Not Happy). This book, like others in the crime fiction genre, expertly plays on the fine line between perception and reality, offering a veiled mirror to our own lives and inviting us to question what truly lies beneath the polished exterior of marital bliss (Gone Girl, The Silent Patient, Best Day Ever). Through captivating narratives filled with unexpected twists and stunning revelations, these books provide a cathartic release while also exploring the depths of our own fears and anxieties about relationships and loyalty.
