Barcelona's Sagrada Familia Nears Completion

The iconic Basilica Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, which began construction in 1882, is drawing near to its completion. Originally intended to be finished by 2026, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has slightly delayed the project.

Upon completion, the Sagrada Familia will boast three facades and 18 towers, with the main tower expected to surpass the Ulm Minster's height of 161.5 meters, making it the tallest church tower in the world. According to the current chief architect, Jordi Fauli, the main tower will measure 155 meters upon completion, with the remaining height to be added in the coming years.

Project manager Esteve Camps aims to finish the Sagrada Familia within a decade, although he has acknowledged that the completion could take eleven or twelve years. The completion of the Sagrada Familia is subject to the absence of unforeseen obstacles.

Despite being unfinished, the Sagrada Familia is already a popular tourist destination. In 2024, a record 4.9 million visitors flocked to the basilica. However, even after completion, the number of visitors is not expected to exceed current capacities.

Officials have invited Pope Leo XIV for the main tower's inauguration, which is anticipated to take place on June 10, 2026, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of architect Antoni Gaudí's death. It is expected that Pope Leo XIV will lead a mass and the opening ceremony of the main tower.

A response from the Vatican regarding Pope Leo XIV's attendance is anticipated by the end of the month, according to Camps. The Sagrada Familia, commonly referred to as the 'eternal unfinished' project, is poised to complete a chapter in Barcelona's rich history, offering visitors a breathtaking testament to Gaudí's architectural genius.
