Pope Leo XIV Under Fire Over Abuse Allegations: A Controversial Rise

The Holy Father Bridges Global Gaps by Linking Landmasses Together

Modern day pontiff, Leo XIV, born in the U.S., is making waves in South America, particularly in Peru, where he's been active for decades. He's the second pontiff from the region, after Francis from Argentina, setting a signal for a closer connection with the Global South.

A vocal advocate for the marginalized, Leo has spoken out against militant Christianity and shared government-critical content. In his days as a missionary, priest, teacher, and bishop in Chiclayo, he worked tirelessly for the impoverished communities and encouraged laypeople in social work. Three-quarters of the Peruvian population identify as Catholic.

However, accusations of covering up abuse cases in his Peruvian diocese have been brought against him by three women. Sarah Pearson, a spokesperson for the survivor support network SNAP, raised concerns about the handling of previous abuse claims upon his election as pope.

Allegations in Peruvian Diocese

The women had reported their cases to the Chiclayo diocese, but Prevost allegedly neither initiated an investigation nor sent the information to Rome, nor did he discipline the two involved priests. The diocese has denied these accusations. On March 25, SNAP submitted the accusations to Rome, but they have not received a response yet.

Peruvian investigative journalist Pedro Salinas dismisses the allegations against Prevost, labeling them baseless. He believes this is a smear campaign by the ultra-conservative faction within the Catholic Church, aimed at discrediting Prevost due to his progressive stance.

Calls for Reforms in the Church

SNAP now urges Leo XIV as the new pope to address the "abuse crisis" in the church. They demand a compensation fund for victims, a zero-tolerance policy in church law, and an internal church office to oversee and enforce these rules.

The allegations cast a shadow on Leo's early tenure, as he navigates the delicate balance of addressing sensitive issues within the Catholic Church, while continuing to uphold his mission of bridging the gap between the Global North and Global South. Time will tell whether Leo XIV can rise above the criticisms and meet the high expectations set upon him as the bridge-builder for Catholics worldwide.
