The "Hogwarts Express"-esque train journey in Scotland is under threat

A Court Order and a Financial Blow

The West Coast Railway Company Ltd (WCRCL) operating the iconic "Hogwarts Express"-like train service in Scotland has been dealt a significant financial blow by a recent court decision. The High Court in London upheld the Office of Rail and Road (ORR)'s stance that WCRCL must install modern locks on its historic trains. This was reported by PA News from the court.

The service includes a train akin to the "Hogwarts Express," running between Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis and Mallaig on the west coast. It traverses the Glenfinnan Viaduct, a renowned sight that features in the Harry Potter films and is frequented by tourists eager for an iconic photograph.

Safety Regulations and Cost

The ORR denial of exemption from central locking had irked WCRCL, who argued that the upgrade would cost a hefty seven million pounds and jeopardize their economically vital status. However, the court sided with the regulator, citing the necessity of safety regulations following several fatal accidents involving passengers. The judge pointed out that the current system, allowing passengers to open doors during high-speed trains, was dangerously outdated and less safe than a central locking system. She suggested financing the retrofit through a modest fare increase.

Preserving the Charm and Safety

While the retrofit marks a considerable financial investment for WCRCL, the essence of this enchanting train journey need not be lost or compromised. By integrating modern safety measures sensitively, the railway company can continue to provide an unforgettable experience to its passengers while ensuring their safety.
