Touching Down in the Octagon Once More
Niklas "The Green Mask" Stolze has made a remarkable comeback in the world of MMA, transitioning from his time with UFC to contesting with Czech promoter Oktagon. This warrior, now 30, seized victory in front of an astounding 19,000 spectators in Cologne, trailblazing a new chapter in his MMA journey. In an exclusive interview with ntv.de, Stolze shares his thoughts on his return, the allure of emerging MMA events in the East, and the prospects of a showdown with Christian Eckerlin.
Embarking on a Memorable Journey
How did the thrilling experience of performing in front of 19,000 die-hard fans in Cologne feel?
The atmosphere was absolutely electrifying. Although public performances aren't usually my forte, I had a clear vision this time around. I dedicated the music to my Hardy Boys, paying tribute to the entertaining spirit and vivaciousness present in the Attitude Era of the WWE. It's crucial to get the crowd pumped up for the main event and entertain them to the max, striking a balance between fun and respect for the seriousness of an MMA fight. Pleasing the crowd is a key component of showmanship, and although I don't engage in the trash talk and insults typically associated with wrestling, I do acknowledge the importance of putting on a captivating performance.
The Path to Triumph over Kalasnik
Your encounter with Andrej Kalasnik resembled your defeat in the UFC against Benoit Saint-Denis. What was different in this instance?
Several factors played a role in my success this time. Firstly, Saint-Denis has significantly improved his prowess, now occupying a top-ten spot within the UFC's weight class. Secondly, I remember noticing Kalasnik's exhaustion in the early stages of our bout, which may have weakened his formidable body triangle and bodylock. With his energy waning, I managed to break free from his grasp and gain the upper hand. However, Kalasnik delivered a knee to my face immediately following the release, momentarily awakening me and enabling me to execute my strategy successfully. In summary, Saint-Denis' improvement and Kalasnik's initial energy drain contributed to my momentous victory in Cologne.
Embracing the New and Improved Niklas Stolze
What led to the notably more relaxed and confident version of yourself viewers witnessed during your comeback?
As I’ve matured to the age of 30, I've experienced a profound transformation within myself. It's akin to waking up to the reality of wanting more out of life as an adult. Alongside my loving wife and exceptional gym coach Sascha Poppendieck, I've built a powerful team that encourages me, fosters my growth, and elevates my motivation. Training together with young talents at La Onda Gym in Magdeburg has added energy and positivity to my life, further augmenting the charming persona we saw in Cologne. The essence of this new and improved version of myself is now firmly ingrained within me.
Oktagon vs. UFC: Similarities and Differences
In what ways does your experience with Oktagon differ from that of teaming with the UFC?
Although the processes surrounding media events, training, and press conferences are somewhat more rigid within the UFC, the financial opportunities are significantly greater in the United States. Nevertheless, I am blessed to have signed a lucrative contract with Oktagon, which provides me with ample opportunities to earn substantially. Now that I've become a father, securing a consistent income is of top priority to ensure a successful work-life balance.
The Need for Major MMA Events in Eastern Europe
What could the eastern region benefit from having an MMA event of Oktagon's caliber?
I truly believe that the Eastern region boasts immense potential in terms of MMA talent and fan culture. The opportunity to showcase our skills on a larger stage will only amplify our growth and popularity in the sport. Leipzig's large hall and Magdeburg's Getec Arena are perfect arenas to foster a fierce atmosphere, where German MMA fighters like Christian Eckerlin and I can thrive. I'm optimistic that these events will inspire future talent to emerge, eventually leading to a resurgence of German MMA throughout Europe.
The Pursuit of the Oktagon Championship
Who are some notable German fighters in your weight class that you would be open to facing in a German-German duel?
I maintain a positive relationship with Christian Eckerlin, and while a match between us has been proposed on multiple occasions, I can't see it happening at this time. I believe that we both can pursue individual championship titles, and our clash within the cage isn't essential for either of us to succeed. Our shared passion for the sport and energy to compete should remain mutual, without requiring a direct confrontation.
