The city of Düsseldorf on the Rhine is gearing up for a runoff election for the position of mayor on Sunday, with Green Party candidate Clara Gerlach and Social Democratic Party (SPD) candidate Fabian Zachel vying to replace the incumbent, Dr. Stephan Keller.

The two candidates have been focusing on their political positions and ideas for the city during the interviews they granted to the Dusseldorf Advertiser this week.

Clara Gerlach, as a Green Party candidate, is likely to emphasize sustainability, environmental policies, and progressive urban development, in line with typical Green Party priorities in Germany. Fabian Zachel, on the other hand, being from the SPD, is expected to focus on social justice, affordable housing, and public services improvement, common themes for the party.

The candidates' collaboration suggests a shared interest in progressive governance and possibly social-ecological transformation of Düsseldorf. However, during the interviews, both candidates criticized their respective opponent.

Thomas Geisel, one of the two remaining candidates in the election, also spoke with the Dusseldorf Advertiser about his political positions and ideas for the city. The interview focused on his plans for Düsseldorf, but specific policy details were not extensively discussed.

Dr. Stephan Keller, the incumbent mayor, was also interviewed about his political positions and ideas for the city. The interview did not delve into the possibility of defeat in the election.

The first round of voting for the mayoral election took place on September 13th. The runoff election on Sunday promises to be an exciting contest between the two progressive candidates, both aiming to bring about change for Düsseldorf's future.
