The Golden State Warriors hesitate to ship Jonathan Kuminga to the Sacramento Kings in a potential trade deal.
In an intriguing turn of events, the Golden State Warriors' forward, Jonathan Kuminga, remains unsigned just two weeks before the start of the new NBA season. Kuminga, who was the 7th pick by the Warriors in the 2021 NBA draft, has had a rocky relationship with head coach Steve Kerr, which may be why he has never seen a full-time starting role with the team.
Over four seasons, Kuminga has played in 258 games and made 84 starts with the Warriors. However, his future with the team is uncertain, as he has turned down a three-year, $75.2M deal with a team option in the 3rd season at Golden State. This decision comes as the Warriors have only signed nine out of 15 roster spots for the upcoming season.
The Warriors have offered Kuminga a three-year, $75.2 million contract, but Kuminga and his agent are hesitant to sign that deal, aware that the Warriors could trade him if he signs a long-term extension. The Warriors do not want to see Kuminga go to another California team and have success, and they are particularly reluctant to trade him to Sacramento, fearing he could become an all-star on a new team.
NBA insider Sam Amick reported that the Kings have shown interest in Kuminga, and it was also reported that the Kings made a trade offer to the Warriors this offseason. The Warriors' co-owner Vivek Ranadive, who used to be with the Warriors, may be a factor in the Warriors' reluctance to send Kuminga to the Kings.
Despite the ongoing contract negotiations, members of the Warriors' front office are not ready to "quit" on Kuminga. All signs point to Kuminga signing a one-year qualifying offer with Golden State this offseason, which would allow him to hit unrestricted free agency in 2026. This may be Kuminga's best bet, as he has reportedly expressed a desire to play for the Kings and is said to be 'miserable' and has 'zero interest' in playing for the Warriors again.
The question now remains, when will Kuminga make his decision regarding the 2026-27 season? Only time will tell if the Warriors can convince Kuminga to stay or if he will pursue a new opportunity with the Kings.
