The Fate of Nancy Camacaro, a Venezuelan Opposition Ally Examined

In a troubling turn of events, Nancy Camacaro, a collaborator of Venezuela's main opposition party, has been reported missing since July 21, 2025. This alarming development has been brought to light by various NGOs and human rights groups, who claim that Camacaro was detained arbitrarily and held incommunicado, a serious violation of human rights and the Venezuelan Constitution [1][2][3].

Camacaro, a resident of Barquisimeto, Lara state, 370 kilometers west of Caracas, is known to have health issues including hypertension, chronic back and arm pain, and sudden dizziness. According to local press, she requires continuous medical treatment for her conditions [4].

The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (Clippve) has denounced Camacaro's disappearance and demanded that her physical and emotional integrity be guaranteed. The organisation also suspects that she is being held in a military intelligence prison [3].

As of August 2025, the Venezuelan state has not revealed Camacaro's whereabouts, and no official updates detailing legal charges or her release have been made public [1][3]. This case fits within a broader pattern of political repression and state-sanctioned human rights abuses following the 2024 Venezuelan presidential election, as noted by multiple sources describing intensified "state terrorism" against opposition figures [1].

Foro Penal (FP) reported on August 4 that there are 807 political prisoners in Venezuela, including 95 women. Of these, 638 are civilians and 169 are military personnel [2]. Edmundo González Urrutia, a politician whom the opposition insists won the 2024 presidential elections, is one of the political prisoners. Camacaro is a collaborator of his [5].

In Venezuela, not being allowed to appoint a private defense lawyer indicates that Camacaro has not had access to legal assistance. Clippve has demanded that the Venezuelan state immediately release Camacaro and reveal her whereabouts [3].

This unsettling situation highlights the urgent need for transparency and adherence to human rights in Venezuela. As the search for Camacaro continues, the international community stands in solidarity with those advocating for her freedom and the rights of all political prisoners in the country.
