Latest State Election Poll Suggests AfD and Left Getting Stronger, CDU and Greens Lose Support in Baden-Württemberg

Maybe it's the change in the political winds, but it appears that a couple of the more extreme parties are gaining ground in the next state election in the region of Baden-Württemberg. According to recent polling by Infratest dimap, on behalf of Southwest Broadcasting (SWR) and the Stuttgart newspaper, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and The Left could be in for a significant boost if voting took place this weekend. The AfD, for instance, would reportedly receive a staggering 19% of the votes, up four percentage points from their December tally, while The Left could potentially increase by a whopping four percentage points as well, standing at 7%.

It's a different story for parties in the center, though, as they're expected to experience a decline in support, according to the poll. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) would reportedly still lead with 31% of the votes but would see a drop of two percentage points compared to the December poll. The Green Party (Greens) would also lose two percentage points, putting them at 20%. The Social Democrats (SPD) would drop slightly to 10%, while the Free Democratic Party (FDP) would show a marginal improvement of one percentage point to 5%. The BSW would remain at 4% and would not enter the state parliament.

Compared to the 2021 state election, where the Greens secured 32.6%, the CDU took 24.1%, the SPD garnered 11%, the FDP scored 10.5%, and the AfD won 9.7%, it appears that some serious changes have occurred since then. The BSW, which was founded in early 2024, starts off at a disadvantage, given their relatively recent inception.

As for the upcoming Baden-Württemberg state election, slated for March 8, 2026, current Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) will not seek a fourth term; he has been ruling in coalition with the Greens and CDU. former federal minister Cem Özdemir will contest the election for the Greens, and CDU state and faction leader Manuel Hagel will run for the CDU. Both are due to be officially nominated as their respective parties' top candidates at upcoming conventions.

The poll suggests that voters would prefer a CDU-led government, at 42%, while a government led by the Greens would appeal to 29% of respondents. The AfD, however, has won the favor of 19% of potential voters. That being said, when it comes to the top candidates, 39% would vote for Cem Özdemir from the Greens, compared to only 18% who would choose CDU state leader Manuel Hagel. In a surprising turn, AfD's Markus Frohnmaier garnered a mere 7% of the vote.

The representative poll was carried out among 1,146 eligible voters in Baden-Württemberg between May 7 and 13, and has a maximum margin of error of between two and three percentage points. Keep in mind, polls can always be subject to uncertainties, particularly when party loyalty wanes and voting decisions are made more short-term.
