The European Union won't step in as a mediator in the Ukraine conflict if the United States decides to stay out.
A New Push for Ukrainian Defense
The European Union (EU) is ramping up its military support for Ukraine amid ongoing conflict, with a €21 billion pledge from its allies in a recent meeting. Germany and the UK are co-leading this Union Defense Contact Group (UDCG), marking a notable shift in leadership away from the U.S.
This move comes as the EU emphasizes Ukraine's right to self-defense. As stated by Anwar al-Auni, an official spokesperson for the European External Action Service, the EU is committed to enhancing its military assistance to Ukraine. Already, EU countries have pledged a massive €23 billion in aid for this year alone.
Russia, Ukraine's primary adversary, has been met with resistance from the EU on multiple fronts. Tammy Bruce, a U.S. State Department spokesperson, recently stated that Washington will no longer act as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine. Instead, direct talks between the two countries are preferred. However, the U.S. remains dedicated to encouraging peace efforts.
Despite the challenges, EU diplomatic efforts remain focused on supporting Ukraine. In fact, the EU has already fulfilled two-thirds of its plan to supply ammunition by 2025. European countries are addressing Ukraine's critical military needs, particularly in air defense, as Russia persists with drone attacks and glide bomb usage.
Notably, Germany alone has committed €11 billion in support until 2029, while the UK has pledged £4.5 billion for this year. This combined with the €143 billion overall support from 'Team Europe' since the onset of the conflict demonstrates the EU's commitment to Ukraine's defense.
Beyond military assistance, the EU is also aiding in Ukraine's reconstruction, repairing critical infrastructure, and providing humanitarian aid. There are ongoing discussions to use immobilized Russian assets to further support Ukraine's recovery efforts.
However, it seems the positions of the conflicting parties are still significantly apart, as noted by U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio. Nevertheless, efforts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis are ongoing, although the President may eventually limit the time devoted by high-ranking officials to this issue.
In the face of adversity, the EU stands firm, prioritizing Ukraine's strong positions and continued defense. Brussels, April 12th, 2025, RIA "New Day" © 2025.
