The European Parliament's stance on its influence within the European Union
In a series of escalating events, Russian jets have once again violated the airspace of NATO countries, this time over the Baltic Sea. The incident occurred on Friday evening, near the site of a previous jets game in Vaindloo, Estonia.
The security zone over a Polish drilling platform was violated by three MiG-31 jets, according to reports. The jets flew over the Petrobaltic drilling platform at a low altitude of 150 meters, causing concern among NATO forces.
Following the violation, NATO forces immediately responded and intercepted the Russian aircraft. According to the NATO spokeswoman, the interception maneuver was carried out, but she did not provide specific details. Italian F-35 jets were reportedly involved in the interception, according to Estonian reports.
Last week, more than 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace, some of which were shot down by NATO jets. This latest jets game may further escalate tensions between Russia and NATO countries.
Manfred Weber, the chairman of the European People's Party, called for a strong European air defense in response to the repeated violations of NATO countries' airspace by Russia. He believes that President Vladimir Putin is testing the European defense capability.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the repeated violations as a systematic Russian campaign against Europe, NATO, and the West. He called for a systematic response to these violations.
Poland reported the incident to the appropriate authorities, potentially triggering further action under NATO protocols (Article 4 consultation). This consultation process allows for member countries to discuss any threat to their territorial integrity, political independence, or military forces.
The Estonian army reported a duration of 12 minutes for the violation near the Baltic Sea island of Vaindloo. This is not the first time Estonia has experienced such an incident, as Russian jets violated its airspace near Vaindloo last week.
The repeated incursions by Russian aircraft into NATO countries' airspace are a cause for concern for many. NATO forces have been conducting air policing missions over Estonia and Poland to prevent any violations and assert deterrence during increased tensions.
In response to these violations, Zelensky has called for a united front among NATO countries to counteract Russia's aggressive actions. The situation remains tense, and it is crucial for NATO countries to work together to maintain peace and security in the region.
