Celebrating 800 Years: Gießen and Hradec Králové Reinforce Friendly Ties

In a grand celebration, the cities of Gießen and Hradec Králové marked the 800th anniversary of their partnership on September 6-7, 2025. The festivities, held under the patronage of Mayor Pavla Springerová of Hradec Králové, attracted a record number of seven out of ten partner cities from six different countries.

Mayor Frank-Tilo Becher of Gießen led a delegation that included Councilor Thomas Lesch, Dr. Nadia Ismail, director of the Gießen Art Hall, and Janina Brenzel, director of the International, Europe, Cities Partnerships and Fair Trade department. The delegation conveyed warm congratulations from their city to Hradec Králové during the celebrations.

The events included a formal reception, the presentation of partner cities on the main stage at the large market square, a historical procession, and impressive performances. These activities provided opportunities for exchange in various fields of interest, reinforcing friendly ties between the cities and marking an important step towards closer cooperation.

The celebrations showcased the city's developments over the last 800 years, offering a glimpse into the rich history of Hradec Králové. Mayor Becher emphasized the potential for future cooperation between Gießen and Hradec Králové, highlighting similarities in size, housing, infrastructure, universities, clinics, and cultural institutions.

The meeting signified the importance of international friendships and cooperation across borders. Further discussions on future cooperation between Gießen and Hradec Králové are planned, aiming to build on ideas generated and implement them innovatively. The city partnership between Hradec Králové and Gießen, known as the "Hradec Králové - Gießen City Partnership," continues to thrive, fostering cultural, educational, and economic exchanges between the two cities.
